Mary Elaine Harris - Fiber Artist
I was born and raised here in Birmingham where I attended Woodlawn High School. After school I would catch a bus and ride downtown to Loveman's Department store where I took knitting lessons.
At that time I had to knit from other people's patterns. Several years ago, I ran across some books on freeform knitting. My knit spirit was freed.
With freeform knitting there is no pattern, as such. I just grab some favorite colored and textured yarns and let the piece design itself as I knit.
I have a degree in Graphic Design from UAB. My favorite professor, Edith Frohock, said above all "I was a colorist".
She was correct. I love playing with color and watching as the colors play together in my pieces.
