Cathy Jo Wheeler - Jewelry Artisan

Cathy Jo works with dichroic glass, wire, and precious metal clay. She is drawn to bright, rich colors and the interplay of light both reflected and transmitted through the dichroic glass. She cuts dichroic glass into different shapes, designs the piece, and fuses it in a kiln. Cathy uses sterling wire to wrap each piece which creates a beautiful way to anchor the piece to the ear wire or chain. Cathy Jo also creates unique jewelry from sterling silver and gold wire.

Always learning and striving to grow and expand her skills, Cathy Jo started working with silver metal clay.  She molds, cuts, carves, and shapes the clay into various designs. She often adds semi-precious stones to her silver pieces. She incorporates her fused dichroic glass cabochons within the silver clay, as well. Cathy Jo has found that working with precious metal clay is the perfect combination of the skills she developed in her college art classes and the skills learned in designing jewelry.

A Birmingham native, Cathy Jo graduated from the University of Montevallo with adegree in Art with concentrations in ceramics and photography. After retiring from the Federal Government, Cathy Jo returned to her art. She has been creating jewelry since 2011. A co-owner and treasurer of Artists Incorporated Gallery for 10 years, Cathy Jo is also past President, former Co-Show Chair and Screening Chair of the Bluff Park Art Association.
